Mental toughness is a hot topic in sport. It can often split the difference between champions and the rest. For athletes, its having mental strength, flexibility and handling pressure to overcome challenges. Jürgen Klopp called his own Liverpool side 'mentality monsters'. He knows the importance of mental toughness and what it can provide. It is one of the psychological pillars that grew Liverpool FC from a troubled football club in 2015 to a European giant, delivering a Champions League in 2019 and Premier League in 2020. I’m going to dive into ways you can develop your mental toughness so you can be resilient, handle pressure and overcome challenges you face.

Myths of Mental Toughness
Mental toughness is not something you either have or you don’t have; it’s a skill that you train over time. At its core, it is about being able to stay focused, motivated and confident, even when things are difficult. It’s about staying calm under pressure and bouncing back from setbacks. Let’s see what we can do.
1. Have a Growth Mindset
Start by believing that you can grow and improve as a person. Athletes who believe that their skills and knowledge can improve from commitment and hard work tend to perform better under pressure. Try to look at failures as lessons. What have you learned from something not going your way? Is it going to help you get what you want? If so, use it.
2. Set Realistic Goals
Have clear goals that you know you can achieve. Look into SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based). Breaking down goals into manageable steps can reduce pressure and give you more confidence. Check out my blog post about goal setting to learn more about it.
3. Visualisation and Mental Imagery
This skill can help you take control back from difficult situations. You can imagine how you’re going to win to build confidence, or imagine uncomfortable situations and use planned solutions to use to solve them. This can reduce pressure and build confidence in your performances. This mental imagery post dives into this in more detail
4. Build Coping Strategies
All of us have different things that cause stress before, during and after game situations. Once we identify these, we can use techniques like breathing exercises, muscle relaxation and mindfulness to help you manage pressure and build resilience. Different techniques work for different people. It’s about finding what you like and what works for you.
5. Positive Self-Talk
You can use self-talk to build confidence and mental strength when you're challenged. Whenever you have thoughts that aren’t helping you in your performance, counter them with positive ones. Having a clear inner voice can help manage your mentality.
6. Concentration Skills
In high-pressure moments, maintaining concentration with the task at hand can reduce the pressure you may feel. Developing attentional control and narrowing the focus of your attention are good skills for yourself to develop. Click the link to find out more on attention and focus
7. Adaptability and Flexibility
So much can change in such a short space of time, meaning it is important to be able to deal with that. Having a flexible mindset can help with your ability to deal with change and solve problems sooner.
8. Learn from Failure
At some point, we all experience failure and that is a good thing. There are lessons to be learned in failure that make you a better athlete. These lessons can help you reach heights that you previously haven’t. Appreciate the lesson and grow from it.
9. Get Professional Help
Like you have a head coach to help you with tactics or a strength and conditioning coach to help develop your fitness, sport psychologists or mental coaches can develop your mentality. They can help overcome problems you may be having or develop skills like your mental toughness to higher heights.
10. Practice, Practice, Practice
As you would do with any other skill, you have to practice to build the skill. Treat your mental toughness training with the respect you give physical training. Do it consistently, little and often, and you will build mental toughness.
The Take Home Message
Mental toughness is a key skill for the greatest athletes. They can stay resilient, focused, and confident in key moments during a competition or season. Remember, mental toughness isn’t something you achieve, it’s something you grow and maintain. Going through that journey will help you achieve your goals and become an elite athlete.
